First Tomato
I know I'm light years behind all my crazy-awesome gardener peeps (I'm looking at you, Carla, Marc, and Cynthia), but I was excited to harvest my first tomato on Tuesday. I planted these starters super late in the spring and wasn't sure whether I might have missed my window. Also, I have only two plants, so there's not much room for error.
But thanks to the Earthbox I got from Austin Urban Gardens (thanks again, Carla!), the two plants I do have are literally loaded with promise.
Promises they intend to keep, apparently.
Pretty, isn't it? Few things taste better than a tomato you grew yourself.

Cynthia, I'm embarrassed to admit that I was worried I wasn't going to get anything in the ground soon enough, so I just picked up a couple of random plants at Home Depot without researching first. I ended up with one called Husky Cherry Red and one called Bonnie Grape (and I think Bonnie is the brand name of the company that grew the starters).

ReplyDeleteTrust me, Kelly, I am TERRIBLE with plants, especially outdoors. My usual methodology for my yard is basically Darwinism. But the Earthboxes make it SO EASY since they are self-watering, so the plants don't need as much attention. Plus, once they started flowering and growing little tomatoes, it got me all excited to water them every once in a while! :)
ReplyDeleteThat's a good looking tomato! And thanks for the reminder to go water my plants. I, too, started way late in the season and I'm not sure my plants are going to produce fruit either. Those earth boxes sound great for those of us with black thumbs!

ReplyDeleteSo exciting! Beware though, once you've had your own homegrown tomatoes you will not be able to buy one from the store again. Totally worth it though.
